Tennis has promising new team

Rachel M. Robinson, Charger Staff

Cookeville High’s tennis teams continue to shine as the season rolls on. The Cavs men’s tennis team has had an awesome start for the 2003 season. Justin Proctor, John Boots, Ian Jassit, Chris McReynolds, John Rader, and ???? have lead the team thus far.

Watching double’s team Proctor and Boots is like watching a fork in a microwave... there’s lots of energy. And they’re not the only ones.

The entire team is focused and energized. “It’s hard to win a match with only person... We should be quite competitive for the District Championship,” predicted Coach Karen Brooks. This goal is attainable if the men keep working hard.

The Lady Cavs tennis team held tryouts the last weekend in February for prospective players.

The new members are freshmen Whitney Burks, Courtney Cobb, Sarah Coppa, Libby Lamb, Tash Morris, Hailey Proctor, and Sarah Vandergriff; sophomores Aris Axelgard, Kamila Greziak, Jenna McKinnie, and Mollie Wolfe; juniors Natasha Jain and Rachel Robinson; and senior Chihiro Saji.

These ladies join the current team members of Jessica Easley, Katie Grosklaus, Leigh Ivey, Jessica Jolley, Jennifer Luna, Susan Luna, Annie Staton, Amy Walker, Liz Williams, and Natalie Winningham.
Steve Young, coach of the Lady Cavs tennis team, said, “The girls have been working hard and have been playing very well. We still have a few things to work on, but overall I’m proud of how we’ve been doing.”

The men’s team had a record of 6-2 and the women’s team had a record of 5-3.

The teams faced tough competition when playing Oakland and Blackman, but both of the teams continue to practice and play hard in order to defeat their opponents.

The Cavs and Lady Cavs tennis teams will be in action on the home courts on April 31 at 3:30.
