War: CHS students speak out
Anyone who knows me well knows that I oppose the war as a course
of action against Iraq, and anyone who knows me at all would probably
guess as much.
Rather than espouse my views, I decided to find out how others feel
about the war.
With the help of my friend Billy George, I gathered the following
comments from CHS students:
“I think war is one of the worst solutions to our situation
with Iraq, but our troops should have our support because they are
risking their lives for our freedom of government.” -Josh
Gentry, senior
“Though times of war are always complicated and even intriguing,
we need to remember that every freedom we have has required a sacrifice
and a price.” -Matthew Russell, senior
“I don’t agree with war at all, but I do support our
troops since they’re already over there. I don’t think
President Bush is doing the right thing.” -Brinna Spaetgens,
senior
“I feel that the war in Iraq is an uncalled for display of
arrogance on the part of the United States and that diplomacy was
not given a proper chance under the leadership of President Bush.”
-Josh Mattingly, junior
“I do not think the United States should play God over any
other country.” -Rachel Robinson, junior
“Before the war started, I was opposed to the idea; but, now
that we are in an actual wartime situation, I support the President
and the troops wholeheartedly because I feel that the more support
we have the sooner this will be over.” -Tyler Pannelli, senior
“I support the war in Iraq because I feel it is part of the
war on terrorism.” -Billy George, senior
“I support the war in Iraq because I feel that Saddam Hussein
presents an eminent danger to his people and to other people around
the world.” -Ashley Baxter, senior
“I believe that we need to support our troops so this doesn’t
turn into another Vietnam.” Eric Walker, senior
“I feel that President Bush made the wrong decision to enter
the war without more support, but I do back the troops, and I think
we should finish what we started.” -Lauren Powell, senior
I don’t agree with the war. I don’t believe that our
intentions are pure. The United States has bigger threats to consider,
and I’m not sure what business we have in Iraq or how we will
be accepted by the Iraqi people.” -Ethan Ballinger, junior
“Although my brother is currently serving in Iraq with the
101st Airborne, I do not oppose the war. I feel it is necessary
to protect our freedom and to ensure the freedom of the Iraqi citizens,
who deserve much better than what they are currently getting.”
Nikki Gaw, senior
“Saddam Hussein is indeed a terrible man and should be eliminated.
Although, if we were to do this, what would it say about other countries’
leaders and their abilities to do the same to their enemies?”
-Orin Christianson, senior
“Don’t mess with Texas.” -Jesse Dalton, senior
“The war affects me because, if anything happens in the United
States, I will have to go home.” Michele Clay, senior foreign
exchange student
Hopefully, something positive will come out of this. Thanks to all
who shared their thoughts.
