Cookeville High wins Science Bowl

The annual Tennessee Science Bowl was held on Saturday, March 29, and saw the top students from across the state compete. The Cookeville High School team, consisting of seniors Suman Natarjan, Tyler Pannell, and Bobby Liu, junior Evan Paul, and freshman Eddie Liu, won first place, displaying their estensive knowledge of many different branches of science.

The event included teams from 28 schools in the state of Tennessee. The event was held at the Blount County Campus of Pellissippi State Technical Community College.

The Tennessee Science Bowl is sponsored by the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Operations, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, and Pellissippi State Technical Community College.

The winning Cookeville High School team will receive a $1,000 cash prize for the school, a first-place trophy , and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C., to compete with over 60 other regional winners in the DOE National Science Bowl, which will be held May 1-5, 2003.

“ I’m in awe of the talent and knowledge displayed by these young students--its really amazing,” said Gerald Boyd, DOE Oak Ridge Operations Manager, just after the competition had been judged.

Boyd said, “These students are a great representation of their schools, and I’m extremely proud to be a part of this event.”
