Student battles hiccups for over three years

Nikki Wise, Charger Staff

Do you remember how annoying it is to get the hiccups and not be able to get rid of them?

I’ve had the hiccups for at least three and a half years. They aren’t the normal, constant hiccups though; they are random and it is one hiccup every once in a while.

The jokes do roll in. People ask me what have I been drinking. Some give me strange looks when a hiccup comes out at strange times.

One time when I was at a church activity someone was giving announcements. Everyone was quiet and all of a sudden I hiccuped and very loudly. Every person in the auditorium turned around and stared at me. It was very embarrassing, but I got over it very quickly because every one started laughing.

Another time I was in a play backstage. I again hiccuped very loudly and the whole audience heard me.

My hiccups don’t even sound like real hiccups. They sound more like a screaming dying rabbit.

I guess it is just one of my weird quirks. Everybody has them and in a way I am proud I have my strange way of hiccuping. It gives me character and makes me unique. I enjoy being different from everyone else because it brings color and depth to the world. If everyone is the same the world would be very gray and boring. So, if you hear someone that sounds like a dying rabbit, don’t point and laugh, it is just me.
