Science Fair a success this year
Josh Mattingly, Charger Staff
Every March, just before the Tech Regional Competition, CHS holds its
annual science fair. Students from all over the school entered their projects
into the fair. Project topics and presentation were left completely up to the
students creative minds, making this years science fair the best
that Cookeville has ever seen.
A wide variety of projects were divided into two divisions: physical science
and biology.
The finalists in the Physical Science division were: 3rd place - David Epley
and Scott Faws Low density flexible foams, 2nd place - Lauren
Powells How is the viscosity of various materials affected by temprature,
and 1st place - Eric Lisics How much caffeine is in coffee?
The finalists in the Biology division were: 3rd place - Adam Vander Griffs
What effects do alcohol and tobacco have on otherwise healthy tomato plants?
2nd place - Mark McCowans Nitrate pollution as related to watershed
use, 1st place - Lydia Jones Can limestone be used to protect
pine trees from acid rain?
Honorable mention in the Physical science division went to Colin Gentry, Will
Smith, and Kristin Brackett. Honorable mention in the Biology divison went to
Andrew Jones and Nicholas Hankins.
The over all winner of the entire science fair was none other than Bobby Liu
with his Radon, Lung Cancer, Bedrock, and Mathematical Modeling
project. Several of the Science fair participents went on to compete in the
Tennessee Tech science and math competitions.
Over the years the quality of the science fair projects has dramatically improved
according to Mrs. Shanks, the head of the scince department. It is the creative
freedom and the wonderful teachers that have inspired the students into making
this years science fair the best ever.
